Why are we addressing the issue of censorship?

Many might say that this is of course an issue in a communist country, such as China or North Korea, for example, but certainly not here in America where we have our 1st Amendment right to free speech. And that belief would be very wrong. The truth is, a vigorous campaign of censorship has been taking place—in some form or fashion—for years. It was subtle at first, almost unnoticeable; unnoticeable so it would not be rejected outright. But precisely because we do have a 1st Amendment culture in this nation, time was needed to foster a change in that societal belief.

In 2020-2021, that shift is not only here—but is shockingly ramping up. And this does not bode well for the future of a free society.

First, let’s be clear of what censorship is. It is "the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security.”

In any democratic society, there are circumstances that demand the censoring of certain speech, such as in the case of speech that is hateful and meant to incite violence. However, what we are witnessing now is a dramatic “raising of the bar” on the part of those on the far left of the political spectrum who just happen to control most of the mainstream media and social media platforms. Now, even a simple disagreement with one stream of political thought results in the silencing of that voice. This is setting a dangerous precedent, because, unless this level of censorship is addressed and stopped, most certainly it will inevitably lead to nation led by a spirit of tyranny. And once that spirit, that mindset, gets complete control, any voice no matter how it sounds or what it believes, will be subject to being silenced. History attests to this--and we must learn from history!
